URBAN FASHION!

Urban fashion is style born of the street. A ruffian look that emerges from neighborhoods as opposed to fashion dictated by designers. Media and garment associations often merge hip hop and urban fashion partly because they share this same beginning.

The Beginning

  • Urban fashion made a strong impact during the 1980's and into the early 90's.

Fashion Cycle

  • Fashion is usually conceived by designers. Styles then filter downward to the people through channels of marketing and distribution. Through a trickle down effect fashions takes hold. Urban wear originates on the street. First worn by people and then copied by designers who interpret looks redelivering them to the people through marketing and distribution points.

The Appeal

  • The appeal of urban fashion including hip hop style is that it moves in the opposite direction of traditional fashion and often becomes a source of pride to the community or segment of the population who developed the look.

How

  • You pull off urban fashion well when you reflect the tempo and feel of the moment. The goal is to create a blend of fashion and style that expresses the mood of the day. For inspiration check out the rags on local musicians, regional sport stars and street kids in the trendy districts of your city. It is a movement of individuality not mass acceptance so always strive to be authentic to yourself.

Walk around any urban neighborhood and you can see street fashion in the way people mix and pair fashion in fresh ways not seen anywhere else. Street fashion is always changing, so it cannot be described by particular styles of clothing.

The Braids - Bohemian Rhapsody

When the pictures were taken, only one thing was going through my mind....THIS SONG:

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY by THE BRAIDS  ( original version by QUEEN )

Mama just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger, now he's dead.
Mama, life had just begun,
But now I've gone and thrown it all away.
Mama, ooh, Didn't mean to make you cry,
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters.

Too late, my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine, body's aching all the time.
Goodbye, ev'rybody, I've got to go,
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.
Mama, ooh, I don't want to die,
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all.

Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters.
I Didn't mean to make you cry,
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow,
Mama, ooh, I don't want to die,
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all.
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters.

So you think you can stop me and spit in my eye.
So you think you can love me and leave me to die.
Ooooooooh, baby, can't do this to me, baby, just gotta get right outta here.
ooooooooh, baby, can't do this to me, baby, just gotta get right outta here.

Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all.

Nothing really matters, Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters,
Nothing really matters to me.

Any way the wind blows.(softly)

THIS SONG MAKES ME FEEL SO MANY EMOTIONS...ALL AT ONCE, FUNNY THING IS THAT I DON'T KNOW WHY...SUCH A GREAT SONG!!!

Afro Chic, Vintage...YES, this look is back!

So...this one particular day i was going through my mom's old things and of all the items of clothing i found...........this one was my favourite!

It's classy, sexy, sophisticated and damn...looks good on me >>>giggles<<<

Even if I say so myself...but the hair, the shoes, the vintage suitcase, the pearl bangles and neck piece complement this look!

I love how its an all-in-one  > for those who don't know what that is, it's a jumpsuit kinda thing, the bottom is joined to the top!

There is just one thing about all-in-ones though, that moment you have to go pee and you have to take the entire thing off, hahaha...such a mission, especially if it has a lot of buttons!

I love this one tough, because it has a zipper and buttons...so when you really have to go, the zipper is your friend!

These pictures take me way back, back to the #Sophiatown Era #Phata-Phata #Dolly Rathebe and The Ink Spots...yes, black people expressed themselves by always taking pride in their appearances and their music...that is when they were FREE!

You would swear I was around, but NOOOOO! My parents have just always made sure I know these things...their pictures, their music, the movies and documentaries...yes, I AM BLESSED!

I'm so happy that this old, vintage fashion is coming back...this is the stuff we are made of, imagine the first time your parents met and how their parents met and also imagine what they were wearing, their enviroment...maybe it was in one of those underground / backdoor shebeens, biscope (cinema), freedom rally etc...Those were special moments and the fact that we can have a little bit of that brought back by fashion....is amazing!!!

BOX / BOHO / PATRA BRAIDS...

The boho box braids seem to be among the trendiest of hairstyles this summer. Women every where have been going 90′s retro with the chunky waist length braids...

# box braids # african hair # my hair # protective styles # braids # solange braids # me # african beauty # etsy # dreadlocks # dreads # braids

Inspired by the two beauts, Solange Knowles and Patra (Reggae artist from the 90′s) who was most likely the inspiration behind Solange trying these braids out…

So, this type of hairstyle originates from way back...its been around for a long time amongst the African race! I guess you can say that it is a part of our heritage!

So, yes there you have it...the BOX, BOHO, PATRA, POETIC JUSTICE BRAIDS...you just gotta love it!
